Exoplanet Research Workshop

Getting Started

If you are just getting started, here is a streamlined list of steps to follow.

  1. Request to join our mailing list here.
  2. Fill out the application form. Join our Slack workspace to ask any questions.
  3. Fill out the group formation form so we can put you into a group. This should be linked in the message you see after submitting the application.
  4. Once you have completed the above, steps, you should be given access to the Qatar-1b-transits folder on Google Drive. Go to the “Shared with me” tab, find the folder, and then add the folder (note: not a shortcut of the folder!) to your Drive. You can do this by clicking on the folder (once, without opening it), pressing Shift+Z, and then selecting the option to add to your Drive. (You might run into a server error, so this may take a couple of tries before the folder is successfully added.)

After group assignment:

If you have any questions or would like a paper draft reviewed, feel free to contact Paige through Slack or email at any time. If you’re planning to publish your paper, Kalee Tock (our advisor) and astronomers from Exoplanet Watch will eventually review and comment on your work.

All the recordings and slides are posted here as a resource, and more resources are below for your reference.

Imaging Software

Edit (02/09/21): The new EXOTIC transit analyzer notebook now displays the fits files within Colab, but becoming familiar with imaging software should still be helpful for those who are just starting out with exoplanet research.

We would recommend using AstroImageJ if you choose to use outside imaging software, but feel free to use another astronomical imaging software.

The links to download AstroImageJ and SAOImageDS9 are here and here, respectively. Contact us if you run into any download issues.

You can find text instructions for using AstroImageJ here and video instructions here.

You can also use this Colab notebook to view fits files.
